52 Reasons to Hate my Father by Jessica Brody

Goodreads Blurb
Being America’s favorite heiress is a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it.
Lexington Larrabee has never to work a day in her life. After all, she’s the heiress to the multi-billion-dollar Larrabee Media empire. And heiresses are not supposed to work. But then again, they’re not supposed to crash brand new Mercedes convertibles into convenience stores on Sunset Blvd either.
Which is why, on Lexi’s eighteen birthday, her ever-absent, tycoon father decides to take a more proactive approach to her wayward life. Every week for the next year, she will have to take on a different low-wage job if she ever wants to receive her beloved trust fund. But if there’s anything worse than working as a maid, a dishwasher, and a fast-food restaurant employee, it’s dealing with Luke, the arrogant, albeit moderately attractive, college intern her father has assigned to keep tabs on her.
In a hilarious “comedy of heiress” about family, forgiveness, good intentions, and best of all, second chances, Lexi learns that love can be unconditional, money can be immaterial, and, regardless of age, everyone needs a little saving. And although she might have 52 reasons to hate her father, she only needs one reason to love him.

Ok, I'll be cutting this review a bit shorter than normally since I'm in a time crunch! Sorry, guys!
The short pitch: Hilarious and fun, this is definitely one to read if you need a good LOL moment!

Now the only thing that I didn't absolutely LOVE was the romance. While it was endearingly sweet, it wasn't very well developed or believable. The two characters were hating each other, slowly (like, turtle slowly) becoming friends, then BOOM. Love.It just didn't match and I really didn't like it. It was more like it was thrown in for the more...crazier stuff that happens in the second half of the book.

Character development is obviously a giant thing here and I loved that! Lexi was such a...well, let's face it. She was a huge, spoiled bitch in the beginning, but by the end, you have this fun character who jokes around, but knows what's right and that she's not entitled to everything. And it wasn't as sudden as the romance, trust me. You could see her personality change from spoiled to caring. She learns so much throughout the entire book and it was so...I can't say touching, since it wasn't, really. But it was amazing seeing how much she slowly changed.

So I read this during the summer and let me say, it fit the season perfectly. It was a fun, light read that will make you laugh and make you smile. It will fill you with emotional turmoil, so BEWARE. 52 Reasons was a wonderful read that made me want to read more of Jessica Brody's books! And I have no doubt they'll be just as amazing and sassy as this one! Definitely pick this up if you've liked her other books or if you're tired of all those sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal books!

Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

Twenty Boy Summer
Goodreads Blurb
"Don’t worry, Anna. I’ll tell her, okay? Just let me think about the best way to do it."
"Okay."
"Promise me? Promise you won’t say anything?"
"Don’t worry.” I laughed. “It’s our secret, right?"

According to Anna’s best friend, Frankie, twenty days in Zanzibar Bay is the perfect opportunity to have a summer fling, and if they meet one boy every day, there’s a pretty good chance Anna will find her first summer romance. Anna lightheartedly agrees to the game, but there’s something she hasn’t told Frankie–she’s already had her romance, and it was with Frankie’s older brother, Matt, just before his tragic death one year ago.

My problem with Twenty Boy Summer, I think, was just that I had all these high expectations, and I was waiting the entire book, waiting for that magical “OMG LOVE” moment to happen. I mean, I was told that it was super emotional, but it just didn’t work for me. Maybe I was just placing it on a pedestal already and when it didn’t meet up…well, I doubt I would’ve liked it anyways. Like I said, I was waiting for that “LOVE IT” moment.

It didn’t happen.

The first thing that seriously irritated me were the characters. It was…Ugh. I really, really, really, wanted to strangle them, especially Anna and Frankie. Anna followed Frankie on literally ANYTHING no matter how stupid it was. Anna was supposed to be the smart, well-grounded one? She seemed the complete opposite, more of a minion than anything else. Frankie = Oompa Loompa. Anna = Other, less popular Oompa Loompa. I mean, that’s how they acted (not to be harsh). And honestly, Frankie was pretty slutty. I mean, she didn’t feel like it was awkward when a what? 50-year-dude stared at them and bought drinks for them? Or flirting with guys to get free drinks? What’s worse is that Anna didn’t find it too weird. Also: Frankie wasn’t a very nice friend. She was…bitchy. To everyone.

Another thing: the romance wasn’t all too great either. Anna was supposedly still in love with matt throughout the book, but she didn’t act it. She fell in love with Sam so quickly, in one day really. It wasn’t very realistic and I found myself disappointed further. And with Frankie’s own romance…more insta-love for sure. It didn’t affect me and my reaction was more “Oh. Words. Nice. Sentences. Ok. Paragraphs. Yuck.” Anna didn’t seem to get that she’d only know Sam for a day and couldn’t stop thinking about him. It was too rushed, and it seemed like the authors just wanted things to speed along.

Plot-wise, I couldn’t find anything very emotional about it. Anna was hiding a secret and I felt so annoyed by it. But that, I could understand why she didn’t tell. I also loved those symbolical times. Like throwing that red sea glass back into the ocean? That was the only decent part for me, really.

Twenty Boy Summer just wasn’t for me. I had to force myself to get through it, and I mainly skimmed half the book. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this anytime soon. ½ stars for taking place in Cali where I’m from, .5 for teaching me a whole bunch of new words (and helping me with my ELA homework!), and ½ for the good and flowing writing. And that’s me being nice.

Blog Tour: Surrender by Elana Johnson

As part of the Surrender Tour hosted by AToMr, I’ll be reviewing both books, Possession and Surrender. But, two reviews in one post? Nah. But…well it’s the beginning of the month, and you know what that calls for! A Mini Freak Out! (But I realized that my “Mini” Freak Out wasn’t so mini. So SCROLL DOWN TO SEE MY REVIEW OF SURRENDER.)
Mini FREAK OUT!

Page 393: SHE. IS. RISKING. EVERYONE
Page 402: I DON’T LIKE HIM. BUT NOOO
Page 405: THANK GOD I HAVE SURRENDER.

Possession, while intriguing, had a few major things off. First of all, the romance. No matter how much Jag hurt her, Vi always went back for more. And she bounced between Zenn and Jag too much for my taste. And Jag was very…annoying. He seemed to just USE Vi and I felt partial to Vi. Let’s just say, she reminds me of a friend. Without the romance of course. Also, why did these characters had these powers? It gave no history, no background. And the characters couldn’t feign ignorance either. I mean, they seemed to know most anything, and the characters didn’t even stop to ponder where these special genes came from.

What did I love? The plot, the twists, the way that you never knew if someone was a baddie or a Goodie. It was one of those books where there were so many secrets. Everyone had a secret and with all the name changing, you never knew when what would happen and who was who. It was…shocking to say the least when the last possible thing suddenly became possible. My brain exploded too much, but it was amazing!

Blog Tour: Surrender by Elana Johnson

Surrender (Possession, #2)
Goodreads Blurb
Forbidden love, intoxicating power, and the terror of control…
Raine has always been a good girl. She lives by the rules in Freedom. After all, they are her father’s rules: He’s the Director. It’s because of him that Raine is willing to use her talent—a power so dangerous, no one else is allowed to know about it. Not even her roommate, Vi.
All of that changes when Raine falls for Gunner. Raine’s got every reason in the world to stay away from Gunn, but she just can’t. Especially when she discovers his connection to Vi’s boyfriend, Zenn. Raine has never known anyone as heavily brainwashed as Vi. Raine’s father expects her to spy on Vi and report back to him. But Raine is beginning to wonder what Vi knows that her father is so anxious to keep hidden, and what might happen if she helps Vi remember it. She’s even starting to suspect Vi’s secrets might involve Freedom’s newest prisoner, the rebel Jag Barque...

This was defnitely better than Possession, I can say that, but like Possession, the romance was a bit lacking. Gunn and Raine's romance was definitely more steady, but the romance seemed more forced in the beginning. It really wasn't as satisfying. My expectations were high, I guess. It was really the romance I didn't like much, and a bit of the characters, but it was their personality. It wasn't...pleasant at times. But I have to admit, they were developed nicely.

The #1 thing I loved the most about Surrender was that it managed to tie all these new characters in with our old ones, mixing things up so each piece of info matched like puzzle pieces. And it was cool how Elana Johnson made the most irrational things become reasonable, and the most outrageous ideas suddenly become...obvious. Nothing is predictable in this book, but it's not like random things are thrown in. These things seemed well thought-out and continued to advance the plot.

Another cool thing about Surrender, though, was that you didn't need Possession to figure it out, but it's definitely more anticipating if you did. But I loved the new characters! Raine was so fierce and protective and everything (though she did get on my nerves a lot. She seemed to be...all-knowing, but somehow naive at the same time, and that combination did bother me quite a lot.) and she was actually really smart and strategic, so I enjoyed guessing her next move in this giant chess game.
Gunner was definitely a great male lead. There was just something about him you HAD to like. I just can't put my finger on it...

Surrender also changed my opinions about the Vi love triangle and some other things. Honestly, I used to be Team Zenn (scroll up to learn why), but Surrender definitely made me like Jag more. Zenn seemed determined to get Vi back from Jag in Possession, but in Surrender...he seemed resigned. And that's when I stopped liking him, honestly. It also may have osmething to do with Jag's oppositely determination to reach Vi and get her to safety. Yes. Defintiely Team Jag now!!!

Something awesome I've noticed, is that this giant twist? It's been building slowly from Possession and I loved that! How things you think aren't important, are suddenly the biggest hints. To me, that's definitely a sign of good writing! And the world of Possession and Surrender is definitely more detailed in Surrender. Not only that, we learn more about the powers, and just how valuable and important they are. And Raine's power? Useful and so foreboding

Just like book #1, Surrender will leave you hanging (with a...deja vu cliffhanger!) and attack you with revelation after revelation, leaving you stunned and shocked, just like in Possession. Surrender ties old and new characters together, creating a complex plot that will make you stare. The romance is bittersweet and, while seemingly forced, does have a sweet base. As we find out more about this world, we'll just be all the more horrified by what's going on behind the scenes. And that's jsut how we like it, right?

ABSOLUTE BEST THING OF THE WEEK

I got and finished this already! Long story short: I lived for the Kierran, Meghan, Puck, Ash, and Grimalkin parts. I honestly didn't like Ethan and I guess I was hoping that he'd be as awesome a character as Meghan. 4 stars? 3.5? 3 is just TOO low.
SO HAPPY WITH THIS TRADE. Not that I don't want a hardback of Lucid. I've heard absolutely amazing things about it and I can't wait to start! And Evolution of Mara Dyer! Oooh I'm so happy! People are saying it's much more psychotic and creepy than Unbecoming. Heh. As for Stealing Parker...I haven't read Catching Jordan yet, but I'm DYING to, so I thought I may as well read Stealing Parker! Carnival of Souls and Ten are just things I was slightly interested in, so I traded. I'm a bit unnerved by Carnival of Souls though. It seems...not my thing. But I do love Melissa Marr, so we'll see!
I won both of these from Laura Ellen! A signed copy of Blind Spot (with TONS of signed swag! And bubblegum and mints) and a book of my choice from Amazon. I just HAD to pick Finale! I loved Hush Hush. Now, I just need time to read these two! I've been dying for both!
Yes...those are MG books. I'm a YA only blogger, but I got these in the mail from Hachette. I haven't read MG in 2-3 years, and even then I never really read MG. Nancy Drew and those Princess Diaries (Historical fic) were my thing. Yeah, I was a non-modern reader lol! But it sounds interesting and hey, who knows? Maybe a change will do me good! As for Renegade, read and LOVED! Twisted Tragedy of Miss Natalie Stewart is for a blog tour and I'm halfway through and intrigued!
I have some of the best bloggy friends ever who send me so many books. I feel bad that I haven't sent them anything! Don't worry come Xmas, they've packages. Trust me. If they give me their addy anytime soon. ANYWAYS, the awesome Shreya from Chocolate Coated Reviews sent me these 3 beauties! I've been dying for all 3 of these! SO THANK YOU SHREYA AND YOUR HEART MADE OF CHOCOLATE. Because we all know chocolate is better than gold, right?
NO. YOU ARE NOT HALLUCINATING. Because if YOU are, then so am I. And I really don't want to be imagining this. YOU GUYS. THIS IS AN ARC OF BELLADONNA. SEQUEL TO POSSIBLY MY FAVORITE 2012 DEBUT. THIS. IS. MINDBLOWING. AHHHHH!!!!!!! I CANT STOP SQUEALING! THANK YOU SOSOSOSOSOSO MUCH TO Paper Lantern Lit FOR THIS.

So, I had so many mixed feelings about Touching the Surface, so I'm refraining from giving a rating, because half of me wants to give a high rating, the other wants to give a 2 or 3.

While I loved the premise of it, it was more innocent than I expected, though I'm deciding if that was good...or bad? I loved the originality of it, how Kimberly Sabatini created this afterlife, but it seems like one of those hilarious fun reads, than the serious paranormal one I was expecting. But it was a wonderful surprise, don't doubt that! Just not what I was expecting!!! There were so many twists that made my head hurt and I LOVED that! And err...obviously, I had a few strong feelings in a few *cough* a lot *cough* parts! the writing was just gorgeous and I loved it!

The situations though...they were so tough. I just wanted to hug all the characters sometimes, slap others, then just cuddle with my copy of Touching the Surface and huddle into a pile.

What was a bit iffy for me were the characters. While they each had their own personalities, they wren't very well developed and were a bit flat in my opinion! The book also was a bit quick in a few parts, but only for like a page or two, then it was just the awesomness that was left! There was also a bit insta-love, if you can call it that! After all, HELLO soul mates! (Seriously. Where's mine lol?)
